πΏ Federal Elections 2023 and Cannabis Regulation in Switzerland β’ A Pivotal Election Looms πΏ
Hemp enthusiasts, CBD aficionados, and cannabis curious folks, π± it’s time to turn our attention to the upcoming elections on October 22, 2023.
One of the stakes? The future regulation of cannabis in our beloved Helvetia.
Indeed, these elections will determine the makeup of the National Council and the Council of States for the next four years. And let’s be clear: these four years will be pivotal for the hemp industry, for us at uWeed, and, of course, for all cannabis consumers in Switzerland. π₯
The current Parliament’s stance on cannabis legalization
So far, the National Council has shown a rather friendly attitude towards legalizing cannabis in Switzerland, with a slim majority in favor (51% to be precise). That’s quite heartening! π However, the real battle will be in the Council of States. It’s up to us to influence the vote towards a sensible hemp regulation.
Which parties support cannabis legislation ?
Here are the main political parties supporting cannabis legislation in Switzerland:
β Green Liberals: 82% in favor of legalization.
β Greens (Swiss Greens): 79% support.
β FDP.Liberals: 64% support.
β Centre: 59% support.
β SVP: 53% support.
It’s also mentioned that the Young Socialists commend a certain decision regarding cannabis, suggesting they might be in favor of its legalization, although the exact percentage of support is not mentioned (source here).
For the curious, we recommend browsing the official websites of political parties to get a clearer idea of their current stance on the issue.
What’s the current trend regarding the National Council ?
Before the upcoming elections, the National Council shows a slight leaning towards hemp with 51% positioning themselves as “yes” or “rather yes”. It’s up to us to ensure those supporting sensible hemp regulation maintain their majority within the National Council. For the Council of States, the priority is to gain a majority on the hemp issue (See the chart above).
How can we know which politicians support cannabis legislation ?

And why is it so important to regulate recreational cannabis sales ? π€
Because sensible cannabis regulation is at the heart of consumer protection (especially minors), product quality, and the fight against the black market. Imagine a Switzerland where the youth are protected, quality of cannabis is guaranteed, and local small and medium-sized businesses thrive. π
On September 28, 2023, the parliamentary initiative 20.473, led by national councilor Heinz Siegenthaler, was granted an extension aiming at regulating the cannabis market to better protect youth and consumers. This allows them time to address these complex issues.π‘οΈ
Barbara Gysi, heading the subcommittee, emphasized the need for a “comprehensive regulation”. Some expressed concerns, but with a clear vote of 104 for and 69 against, the initiative moves forward! π
Cannabis Legalization, a Future in Switzerland and Europe
Support for this project is not only strong in Switzerland but also inspired by the forthcoming regulation in Germany starting from January 2024. We’re in good company ! π€
The truth is evident. With around 250,000 regular consumers in Switzerland, it’s time to recognize that cannabis is part of our society. It’s time to take measures ensuring safety, quality, education, and youth protection. π
So, to all those who believe in targeted and reasoned regulation, we call on you to act. π’ Vote for the right candidates, educate yourself, and raise your voice for a pioneering Switzerland in cannabis regulation. π
At uWeed, our mission is “delivering happiness”, π and we firmly believe that the future of cannabis in Switzerland is bright and promising. Help us make it possible! π
Stay tuned, stay informed, and most importantly… vote for a green future! π³οΈπΏ
